El Caminito Del Rey – 101m of fear

One of the most famous wonders of Spain, El Caminito Del Rey is a long passage built along the walls of the Gaitanes gorge. Found in the province of Málaga, El Caminito was originally built between 1901 and 1905 and was used as a means of transportation for material and people between two power stations that were built either side of the El Chorro gorge. It was officially opened to the public in the early 1920s by King Alfonso XIII who walked it’s whole length, giving the pathway it’s famous name. Until recently, El Caminito Del Rey was formerly known as one of the most dangerous footpaths in the world (gulp). The pathway was reconstructed to a much safer design and reopened to the public in 2015. 

The views of the El Chorro Gorge are UNBELIEVABLE! The photos really don’t do it any justice, this is something you need to see in person to fully experience it. The El Chorro Gorge is beautiful, with huge walls of rock as high as 400m along its three-kilometre length. We took so many pictures, too many in fact to upload to this blog post so we’ve just picked a small selection which we hope showcases the beauty of it as well as how much fun we had! If you’re afraid of heights (like us lol) have no fear, it’s very high but the initial nerves you get will gradually pass once you realise how secure it is and just enjoy the moment. If it’s on your checklist just make sure you book in advance like we did as it is extremely popular. And bring a coat as it gets pretty chilly that high. And of course food and water to fuel yourself during the walk.
